Shape of Dreams Builds: Choose a Setup You Can Start
Start with Mist's Lunge if you want an available character and active melee timing. For ranged pressure, Lacerta's Incendiary Shot route becomes an option once that alternate Memory is unlocked. If you want fewer manual casts later, Bismuth's Pure Soul setup gains automation from Self-Writing Story; Nachia instead offers summon-led damage and healing after her own unlocks.
The right choice depends on what you can equip and which actions you enjoy repeating. Vesper's close-range attack resets and Shell's red-and-blue Laceration sequences both reward timing, but they have different cooldown and survival needs.

Compare the six builds
Check access first, controls second, and survival third. A build that needs a locked Memory is a future goal. A build whose core is available still needs to suit how you want to move, attack, and recover when a fight goes wrong.
A Memory is a skill, an Essence modifies the Memory it is attached to, and Memory Haste helps skills recover faster. The table compares six specific routes by those parts and their demands; it does not rank every Traveler or promise the same results at equal investment.
| Character and route | Core Memories and Essences | What must be available | Controls and solo/co-op fit | Strength and cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mist — Lunge or Flèche | Lunge with Momentum; or Light-damage Flèche with Flow. Add damage such as Void or Aftershock. | Mist starts available. Flèche requires 75 Elemental kills; Priorité and relevant Stars are further unlocks. | Manual attack–skill–attack timing and Parry. Lunge suits focused solo/boss bursts; Flèche adds group clearing and co-op mobility. | Works with accessible cooldown choices, but spending every movement charge on damage leaves no exit. |
| Lacerta — Incendiary Shot sustain | Incendiary Shot with Clemency, Guidance, and Momentum; a later Battle Cry/Glacial Core extension. | Lacerta starts available, but check Incendiary Shot and preferred Double Tap access. | Ranged attacks while moving; solo or co-op damage, including a route without Predation. | Repeated hits supply healing and overheal Barriers. It needs target contact, and its later pieces take more shopping and upgrades. |
| Bismuth — Pure Soul and Flow | Pure Soul with Flow, supported by another Pure Soul or useful Light Memory. | Unlock Bismuth; equip Self-Writing Story for automatic Memory casts. Manual casting works before that Star. | Ranged spell damage in solo or co-op. Automation reduces casting inputs while movement and dodges remain active. | Repeated Light hits shorten cooldowns. It is not automatic on a fresh account, and the mage still needs defense. |
| Nachia — Moonlight Pact healing | Moonlight Pact with Guidance/Clemency; Nature's Whisper with Wind/Efficiency. | 20 Belphomet defeats unlock Nachia; two Pure White Dream entries as Nachia unlock Pact. Pact of Destiny shares its activation healing. | Manage summon contact, buffs, and movement. Solo summon damage or co-op support with spare healing/Barrier slots. | Healing pieces can start the engine after the unlocks, but Fenrir dying or losing contact interrupts protection. |
| Vesper — Discipline and El's Mercy | Discipline and El's Mercy, with Momentum/Wind for repeated attacks and Frostbite for defense. | Reach Starry Dream to unlock Vesper; unlock both alternate Memories too. | Manual close-range attack resets and retreat timing; solo frontline or co-op frontline/support. | Contact builds attack speed and healing. Missed hits, ranged hazards, and sudden burst damage remain dangerous. |
| Shell — Laceration and Obsidian | Laceration with Obsidian, Confidence or Predation for damage, and Clemency or Umbra for recovery. | Unlock Shell through the Wooden Doll's three souls. The rapid loop needs Obsidian and enough cooldown investment. | Manual red/blue form management and attacks between movement skills; solo or co-op melee damage. | Hit refunds and brief aerial safety support repeated casts, but misses and early upgrade gaps can break the sequence. |
Solo/co-op fit describes the job a setup can perform, not identical difficulty or item availability in both modes. These routes account for v1.4 changes to Mist's Lunge and Priorité, stronger starting Leaf Hounds for Nachia, and Shell's revised Annihilation Stance. With Traveler progression expanded into The Way of Stars, check the named unlock in your current menu instead of relying only on an old mastery-rank label.
Choose a build for your controls and current resources
Mist: manual bursts and adaptable early drops
Mist's starting Lunge gives you an immediate plan: basic attack → Lunge → basic attack. The skill brings the next attack forward, letting you use a short opening without waiting through the ordinary gap between hits. Keep Parry or an escape available when the enemy is ready to retaliate.
Once unlocked, Flèche offers three charges and attack resets for mobile group clearing. Space the casts so you can use the attacks between them. One appropriate cooldown Essence plus useful damage support gives you a working plan without waiting for Obsidian. For the Flèche/En Garde route, Ability Power and health help its Barrier-based survival; Attack Damage can still support chosen AD-scaled damage Essences.
Take your main damage skill toward +7, then reassess whether Essence quality or defense helps more than another skill level. This is an upgrade checkpoint, not a requirement to begin. Lunge's v1.4 base cooldown is six seconds, and Priorité no longer has its old cooldown, so do not spend toward reducing a cooldown that has been removed. Continue with the Mist build and timing guide for unlocks, Stars, and boss openings.
Lacerta: ranged pressure with a staged shopping plan
Lacerta's selected route has a clear chain: Incendiary Shot damage → Clemency healing → Guidance overheal Barrier. Momentum supports the repeated casts that keep empowered shots available. You need to maintain range and land attacks; the healing loop cannot cover an untargetable boss phase by itself.
Start with that core and keep health, movement, and separate protection. Later, Battle Cry with Glacial Core, Inversion, and Eternal Flame extends the healing setup into another damage engine. It is a progression goal, not a shopping list you must complete before the route becomes useful. Early gold helps buy missing pieces; once the core is working, spend Dream Dust on the effects supplying damage and protection.
If your strongest drops favor Attack Damage and critical attacks, follow that separate alternative instead of splitting upgrades evenly between AP and AD. The Lacerta Incendiary Shot guide explains both paths, resource stages, and what to do when hit-based recovery stops.
Bismuth: a Light-spell loop with fewer casts later
Pure Soul's repeated Light hits and Flow form the core. Two Pure Soul copies make a useful starting loadout: attach the first Flow to one copy, and use the other for more Light damage. Another suitable Light Memory can replace the second copy as the run develops; you do not need a second Flow to begin.
Bismuth's book automatically makes basic attacks by default, but automatic Memory casting requires Self-Writing Story. Cast manually until that Star is available. With it equipped, devote your attention to safe movement and dodging rather than assuming the setup can survive while you stand still.
Ability Power strengthens the spells, and Memory Haste reduces downtime. Add health and Barrier support before another damage multiplier when survival is the problem. The Bismuth Pure Soul guide covers her unlock challenge, the automation gate, Star tradeoffs, and Light-spell replacements.
Nachia: summon damage with active healing support
Fenrir's attacks reduce Moonlight Pact's activation cooldown, while Nature's Whisper speeds up attacks. Put Guidance and Clemency on Pact, with Wind and Efficiency on Whisper, to support recovery and uptime. Pact of Destiny is essential to this version's shared activation healing: it passes healing to Nachia; simply owning Fenrir does not establish that connection.
If Moonlight Pact is locked, begin with Sylvan Call and Nature's Whisper. That is a starter summon route, not the complete Fenrir healing loop. Circle of Life is another separate unlock that improves sharing and summon sustain; it is not required just to start playing Nachia.
As a spending plan, alternate Pact and Whisper upgrades toward levels 8–10. If Fenrir keeps dying, bring Pact toward level seven first, then resume the buff investment. His roughly six-second revival creates a real defensive gap, so preserve movement or another protective Memory. Co-op spare slots can carry healing and Barriers for allies. The Nachia Moonlight Pact guide explains the unlock order, healing connection, and support choices without requiring Predation or WILD.
Vesper: repeated melee hits and contact sustain
With both alternates unlocked, use basic attack → Discipline → basic attack. Discipline helps reset the attack, while El's Mercy builds attack speed and restores missing health once its stacks are full. Momentum and Wind help maintain the attack sequence, and Frostbite provides a Barrier tool for committed exchanges.
Take El's Mercy toward level ten as an initial investment target, then address the weakness ending the run: health, cooldowns, stronger protection, or damage during short openings. The sustain needs something you can hit, so retreat when contact becomes unsafe instead of treating healing as permission to absorb every attack.
Keep Cruel Sun and Resolve while the alternate Memories are unavailable. In co-op, Purgatory can heal a teammate rather than Vesper, so it is not guaranteed personal recovery. The Vesper Discipline and El's Mercy guide covers the complete attack loop and the health tradeoffs behind its Stars.
Shell: precise movement with a cooldown engine
Basic attacks alternate red and blue Laceration. Red is a dash with a cooldown refund when it hits a target for the first time; blue provides area damage and a brief airborne invulnerability window. There are vulnerable gaps between casts, so track the form and the next enemy attack instead of pressing through every opening.
Obsidian supplies the attack-effect cooldown interaction behind the rapid loop. Raise Laceration toward level five or six, then improve Obsidian before spending heavily on extra damage. Confidence suits nearby fighting; Predation helps against bosses and Hunters. Keep Clemency or Umbra for recovery through the gaps.
A miss can interrupt the engine. Shadow Walk can give Obsidian another attack-effect opportunity, but cannot replace Obsidian itself. Under v1.4, base Annihilation Stance already allows other Memories during its duration; Controlled Madness is not required merely for that permission. The Shell Laceration guide covers the form sequence, three-soul unlock, and current Stance rules.
What to do when the core piece is missing
Identify the missing job before choosing a substitute. A locked starting skill, an absent cooldown effect, and a lack of healing are three different problems.
| Build | Missing piece | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Bismuth | Flow | Use Momentum for attack-based recovery or Metal for kill-based recovery. Metal is weaker during a boss phase without extra enemies. |
| Bismuth | Self-Writing Story | Cast manually. A cooldown Essence is not an equivalent replacement for automatic Memory casting. |
| Lacerta | Rare Glacial Core extension | Keep developing the Incendiary Shot healing/cooldown core. You do not need every late piece to keep playing. |
| Lacerta | Clemency or Guidance | Use temporary healing or defense, preserve distance, and retain mobility. Rigidity offers protection but does not duplicate the overheal engine. If Incendiary Shot itself is locked, use the guide's starter advice first. |
| Mist | A rare cooldown Essence | Use Momentum, Flow on the appropriate Light-damage Memory, or Metal when kills are available. Keep one effective cooldown slot before stacking more damage. |
| Nachia | Moonlight Pact or Circle of Life | Use Sylvan Call/Nature's Whisper before Pact. Missing Circle of Life does not prevent that starter route. Keep temporary healing and protection; do not assume full Fenrir activation healing without Pact of Destiny. |
| Vesper | Discipline or El's Mercy | Keep Cruel Sun/Resolve while working toward the alternates. Cover a missing Frostbite with useful defense rather than leaving the sustain build unprotected. |
| Shell | Obsidian | Use shorter manual red/blue sequences, reserve dodges and recovery, and postpone rapid chaining. Déjà Vu can start you with Obsidian only if it is already unlocked there. |
Damage, cooldown recovery, and defense are not interchangeable. Once a temporary option solves the current problem, keep it until a replacement actually works in your loadout.
Builds FAQ
Which build should I try on a new account?
Mist and Lacerta are starting characters. Mist's Lunge avoids a separate character unlock and gives you a direct melee timing plan. Lacerta is available too, but the exact Incendiary Shot setup requires its alternate Memory. Choose melee movement or ranged attacks first, then follow the guide using the skills currently available.
Which build needs the fewest manual casts?
Bismuth with Self-Writing Story automates most Memory casts in combat. Her default book attacks alone do not do that, and you still need to move and dodge. Nachia also needs active attention to summon contact, buffs, and healing activations.
Do I need Predation or every rare item?
No. Mist's accessible cooldown options, Bismuth's Flow route, and Nachia's healing core do not depend on Predation or WILD. Focus on the actual engine you selected: Lacerta's rare late extension is optional progression, while Shell's named rapid Laceration loop specifically depends on Obsidian and cooldown investment.
Which build should I use in co-op or Nightmare?
Choose the job you want to perform. Nachia can retain support slots, Vesper can contribute frontline pressure and support, and the other routes offer their described damage styles. On Nightmare, healing alone is less reliable, so preserve Barriers, health, and escape options. Co-op does not remove the requirement to keep hits, buffs, or summons working, and no one route guarantees a clear with every modifier.
