Shape of Dreams Bismuth Guide: Unlock and Pure Soul Build

To unlock Bismuth, keep any Traveler above 900 movement speed for three seconds. Once she is available, Pure Soul and Essence of Flow give you a strong starting point for her build: repeated Light hits shorten Pure Soul's cooldown, while Ability Power makes its missiles hit harder.

Bismuth's book already handles her basic attacks automatically. Add Self-Writing Story when you unlock it, and most of her Memories can cast automatically too. You still need to move and dodge, but you can build the damage loop before reaching that stage.

How to unlock Bismuth

The unlock is tied to Once Upon a Time, so aim for sustained speed rather than a brief spike. Mist is a practical choice because her movement tools and Light as a Feather Star give you a head start. Other Travelers can meet the same requirement.

Before attempting it, open the Memory-editing interface and find the attribute panel in the bottom-left corner. Use its small lock icon to pin it, then watch your movement-speed value while your buffs are active. The number needs to stay above 900 for the full three seconds.

Use Corrosive Trails, Sulfur, and Quicksilver

This route focuses on keeping your speed bonus active long enough to finish the unlock:

  1. Equip Light as a Feather on Mist if available. Take Black Market and Monstrous Charm to improve your chances of finding the pieces through merchant options and refreshes.
  2. Look for Corrosive Trails, Essence of Sulfur, and Essence of Quicksilver. Merchant stock is random, so plan to use the refresh resources you have rather than expecting all three in the first shop.
  3. Attach Sulfur to Corrosive Trails and equip Quicksilver on a Memory. Sulfur turns Trails' damage into Fire damage. Quicksilver grants speed when you deal Fire damage or cast the Memory carrying it.
  4. Upgrade Corrosive Trails and Quicksilver at a well. Activate Corrosive Trails and let its trail damage enemies while you move; the repeated Fire damage refreshes Quicksilver's speed benefit. Watch the pinned attribute panel throughout the attempt. Casting away from enemies will not supply those repeated damage triggers.
  5. If your speed falls below 900 too soon, improve the relevant speed effects and try again. There is no fixed number of upgrades that fits every starting setup.

The important result is the Once Upon a Time achievement and Bismuth becoming selectable. Going over 1,000 is useful extra room, but it is not a separate requirement.

Combine Immolate and Corrosive Trails instead

If you find both Memories before the Essence combination, upgrade them and cast Immolate followed by Corrosive Trails. Overlapping their speed bonuses can push you above the threshold. Keep enough health available for Immolate's self-damage, and wait until both Memories are ready before trying the sequence.

Use your current tooltips to check each bonus and duration. The older setup uses Trails at 15% movement speed for three seconds and Immolate at 20% for 3.5 seconds, with three percentage points added per upgrade. Those values are a starting reference for the combination; your displayed speed and uninterrupted three-second window decide whether it works for your build.

A Starry Dream room can also help if its map description says time flows faster there. Treat it as a useful opportunity when it appears, rather than a destination you must find. If you already have one of the speed Memories, the room's additional speed may be enough to finish the attempt.

If the achievement does not trigger, check whether a buff expired or your speed dipped below 900 during the three seconds. Flèche with an upgraded Quicksilver is another option, but its rapidly decaying speed window makes the timing less forgiving than the Trails route.

Build Pure Soul around repeated Light hits

This setup uses two copies of Pure Soul in Bismuth's starting Memory slots. Attach your first Essence of Flow to one copy and build that copy's cooldown loop; a second Flow is not required to begin. Keep the other Pure Soul for additional Light hits, or replace that second copy with another Light-damage Memory later. Begin with the following pieces:

PieceWhat it does for the build
Pure SoulFires the Light-damage missiles that drive the build.
Essence of Flow attached to Pure SoulReduces the attached Memory's cooldown when you deal Light damage.
Ability PowerRaises Pure Soul's damage.
Memory HasteReduces the downtime between casts.
Self-Writing Story, when unlockedAdds Memory Haste and automatically casts most Memories in combat.

Pure Soul's baseline cooldown is seven seconds. Because it deals Light damage several times per cast, Flow can reduce that cooldown repeatedly while the missiles hit. Upgrade Flow alongside the missile loop: more frequent casts are the goal, but the result still depends on your Essence quality and how many hits connect.

As initial build goals, aim for about 100 Memory Haste and roughly 1,000 HP by the final boss, while continuing to raise Ability Power. These are useful starting targets, not unlock requirements or a promise that you can survive every attack.

Choose Stars for your current Bismuth progress

Self-Writing Story turns the build into an autocasting setup. Its older progression requirement is Bismuth rank 30, so you should expect to play Bismuth manually before having access to it. The Way of Stars expanded Traveler progression in v1.4; look for the named Star in your current progression menu rather than relying only on an older rank label.

This Star also removes manual control over most Memory casts during combat. Choose it if you want to focus on movement and dodging. If you prefer deciding exactly when to use those Memories, keep casting manually with the same Pure Soul and Flow core.

The other major choice is Say Hello To My Little Friends! It adds one second to Pure Soul's cooldown, but increases its missile count with your attacks per second. That makes attack speed useful to your spell damage as well as your book's basic attacks. Pair it with Hurricane and upgrades to Prismatic Vision to take advantage of that trade.

Say Hello To My Little Friends exchanges a longer cooldown for more missiles as attack speed rises. This is the older r.1.0.6 menu layout.

Fill the rest of your available slots around what the run needs:

You do not need a completed constellation to start playing this build. Prioritize the cast loop, then add the Stars that address your weakest part of the run.

Spend resources on the bottleneck

Early on, keep Pure Soul useful and look for Flow. Choose Ability Power and Memory Haste from Chaos rewards when damage and cast frequency are holding you back. If your account already has Flow available through Déjà Vu, starting with it reduces your dependence on finding it during the run. A new account should still plan around drops and shops.

With Say Hello To My Little Friends equipped, level Prismatic Vision toward the 100% bonus attack-speed milestone. More attack speed then supports the extra missile count. Without that Star, put your Dream Dust and relevant Heroic Boss upgrades into Pure Soul instead.

Once the damage loop feels comfortable, give your other slots a defensive job. Mass Protection grants you and allies a Barrier that fades over 1.5 seconds. Ice Shield places a Barrier on a target, then damages nearby enemies when it breaks and heals for each enemy hit. Purgatory damages an area and heals the ally with the lowest health percentage; its healing is tripled when it hits a boss.

On Nightmare, favor reliable Barriers because healing is reduced. A full set of damage tools will not help if Bismuth dies before the missiles can finish their work.

Replace missing pieces without abandoning the run

You can keep the run going when the ideal setup does not appear:

Missing piece or problemAdjustment
Self-Writing Story is lockedCast Pure Soul manually while building the same damage and cooldown core.
Flow has not droppedUse Momentum for on-attack cooldown reduction or Metal for on-kill reduction while you search. Metal is less useful during a boss phase without extra enemies to kill.
You want another Light-damage MemoryReplace the second Pure Soul with Chain Lightning or Starfall.
Boss damage is falling behindConsider Predation for bonus boss damage and permanent Attack Damage or Ability Power growth from boss and Hunter kills.
You need healing from attacksClemency gives the attached Memory lifesteal. Keep Nightmare's reduced healing in mind.

These replacements solve different problems. Predation improves damage and Clemency provides sustain; neither replaces Flow's cooldown role.

If an autocast Memory repeatedly stops your movement, replace that Memory before adding more damage. Mystic Dagger is one example that can hold Bismuth in repeated casting animations as enemies approach. The problem is whether the casts prevent safe movement, so a brief cast animation does not automatically rule a Memory out.

Keep moving at a safe range and save your dodge for incoming attacks. If enemies are already dying quickly but you keep losing runs, improve your health, Barriers, and positioning before adding another damage multiplier.
